Comparative Civilizations 12

Man the Measure of All Things package.  This package was due last Wednesday -- there are still a few outstanding.

Hero as Artist package.  This can come in any time this week -- though with our test on Wednesday, you will want to have most of it done by then.

Reformation; Protest and Communication package.  This will be due two days after we get back in January.  (Note, this is a very short unit.)

If you get the chance, find out a little more about the Reformation.  Why not watch some good documentaries.  Here are a few suggestions:  Christianity - A History; Part 5; the Reformation for a quick look at the changes it brought.  For a really detailed account of the Reformation, look at this series of films:  (1 hour each) The Protestant Revolution; Part 1; The Politics of Belief,The protestant Revolution; Part 2; The Godly FamilyThe Protestant Revolution; Part 3; A Reformation of the Mindand The Protestant Reformation; Part 4; No Rest for the Wicked.  Short and informative, but a little more schoolish, try: The Protestant Reformation; Part 1and Part 2.

So here is the test  breakdown -- though I am still modifying it at the time of writing, so it may be slightly different from this breakdown -- though not by much.  20 Slide Identification - identify the art work and artist (40 marks); 45 multiple choice questions (45 marks) and 3 from a choice of 6 long answer questions (18 marks). The total value of the test is, therefore, 101 marks.

History 12

Topic #5 and 6 Plan. -- note, to ensure we have enough classes to complete course content, we will run units 5 and 6 into one -- "The Cold War" and we will not waste a block for a unit test as this material will form a significant part of the final exam that we write at the end of the course in any case.  These questions will also be submitted in two parts.  Questions #1-62 will come in at the end of the first week in January (marked out of 35) and the remainder are due on the last day of classes (marked out of 15).

Topic #5 and 6 questions

Episode 1 - Comrades; 1917-1945.

Episode 4 - Berlin; 1948-1949.

Episode 8 - Sputnik; 1949-1961.
Episode 9 - The Wall; 1958-1963.
Episode 10 Cuba; 1959-1962.
Episode 11 Vietnam; 1954-1968.

Here, at last, is essay #3.  It is due a week before the end of the semester -- note, this is a week later than indicated on the assignment sheet -- bonus time because I have been tardy in posting it.

Social Studies 11

We have just completed the last part of our History unit and will test all of the 1945 to the Present material on Monday.

Expect the test to have roughly the following mark breakdown:  43 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each) and a choice of 3 from 5 choices (6 marks each). The test is, therefore, out of 71 marks. 30 flash cards are needed to earn 5 marks.

Even though it is getting a little long in the tooth, we will use our locally developed text book for the heart of the Geography unit (in fact the content was written about the same time as most of the material in the Blue text -- given that it takes about 2-3 years to get a book from the writing to the publishing stage).  The main advantage of the local text is that you can access it online at  21st Century World . Just click on the title to access the table of contents and go to what you want from there.

Note that we will test chapters 1-3 of the Geography unit together, in January.

  • Monday, December 17 - Unit Test on post-war Canada.  If you do not have ready access to the Internet at home, be sure to sign out a text book.  If you do have such access, just use a text book in class when you need it and use the online version elsewhere.  These books are wearing out and we can keep them going until I retire this way.  Read pp. 6-11. Do #1-5, p. 11.
  • Tuesday, December 18 - Take up homework.  Introduce Geography portion of the course. PowerPoint for Ch. 1 - Geography.  Read pp. 12-16. Do #1-9, p. 16 & #1-4, pp. 16-17.
  • Wednesday, December 19 - Take up homework.   Complete chapter 1 PowerPoint. Begin watching An Inconvenient TruthYour job while watching this film is to: 1) Identify Gore's thesis in this film. 2) List the evidence he cites to prove his thesis. 3) Explain why Gore convinced you or did not convince you that we must take immediate action to deal with climate change.  Homework:  Do you agree that Climate change is real?  Should Canadians take action?  Do you agree with our government pulling out of the international agreement to reduce carbon emissions -- the Kyoto Accord?  Explain.
  • Thursday, December 20 - Take up homework. Continue watching An Inconvenient Truth. Read pp. 17-20. Do #1-2, p. 17 & #1-4, p. 21.
  • Friday, December 21 - Take up homework.  Watch Climate of Doubt which deals with the Climate Change denial viewpoint.  While watching it, answer the following questions:  1.  What groups in society are most prominent in denying climate change?  2.  What are their reasons for doing so?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Here, at last, is essay #3.  It is due a week before the end of the semester -- note, this is a week later than indicated on the assignment sheet -- bonus time because I have been tardy in posting it.
  • Monday, December 10 - The Cuban Missile Crisis (base notes). If we complete this in class, we will watch as much as possible of the Cold War series segment: Episode 12 Mutually Assured Destruction; MAD 1960-1972. If you have almost two hours available, get in the mood for Monday's lecture on nuclear war by viewing Threads, a British docudrama from the 1980s about a nuclear war -- banned from British TV at the time, it is a highly praised production that gives a frightening, but important view of what such a war might be like. For a straight-forward documentary 0n what would happen to a city hit by a nuclear bomb, watch Nuclear War; A Guide to Armageddon - this links to the first episode, go to the sidebar to link to the other segments. . You might also look at Defcon 2 - Cuban Missile Crisis (Part 1part 2part 3, part 4part 5, part 6).
  • Tuesday, December 11 - Watch Robert McNamara's comments on nuclear war. Deterrence & Nuclear War (base notesPowerPoint

Following up on the Nuclear War and Deterrence material -- You absolutely must see the CNN Cold War series film Star Wars.

Social Studies 11

We did not have time to complete looking at the PowerPoint Post 1945 Canada.  It is up to you to do so on your own time.  Be sure to take study notes.

We just completed a unit test on the interwar years and World War II.  Our next unit test will be on Post-War Canada.  Expect to write it, most likely, on Monday, December 17.  Expect it to have roughly the following content:

43 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each) and a choice of 3 from 5 choices (6 marks each). The test is, therefore, out of 71 marks. 30 flash cards are needed to earn 5 marks.

    Comparative Civilizations 12

The next test is a fair distance off as we have just begun work on the Renaissance.

    History 12

Our test postponed from last week will be given on Wednesday, when extra time is available.    Expect this test to have, roughly, the following breakdown: 75 multiple choice items (1 mark each -- note, this is slightly longer than indicated last week!); 5 map items (1 mark each); 2 out of 3 long answer options (12 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 104 marks).

    Topic #4 Questions.

Be sure to watch as many of the CNN/BBC Cold War series as possible.  This is absolutely the best account of the Cold War on film. We saw the first episode and will see some in class, but cannot take the time to look at all of them.  Here are the links:

    Episode 1 - Comrades; 1917-1945.
    Episode 4 - Berlin; 1948-1949.
    Episode 5 - Korea; 1950-1953.
    Episode 6 - Reds; 1947-1953.
    Episode 8 - Sputnik; 1949-1961.
    Episode 9 - The Wall; 1958-1963.
    Episode 10 Cuba; 1959-1962.
    Episode 11 Vietnam; 1954-1968.
    Episode 14 Red Spring; 1960s
    Episode 15 China; 1949-1972.
    Episode 16 Detente; 1969-1975.
    Episode 18 Backyard; 1954-1990.
    Episode 19 Freeze; 1977-1981.
    Episode 21 Spies; 1944-1994.

    • Monday, December 3 - Complete the Soviet Union & Eastern Europe to 1956 (base notes). We will fill in the last part of the course with a video -- probably John Green's if there is only a short time.  If we have long enough, I will show The Cold War; After Stalin; 1953-1956.  An interesting overview of the whole of the Cold War, showing the Soviet perspective well, is Britain's Channel 4 programme:The Cold War Game; The US.  Look at John Green's Crash Course video: USA and USSR Fight; The Cold War
    • Tuesday, December 4 - Video - India; The Brightest Jewel - from the 20th Century History series (Part 1part 2). Decolonization India (base notes).  If you have an hour and a half, be sure to watch Partition; The Day India Burned.  Another very good docu-documentary series on the partition of India is The Last Days of the Raj (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9).
    • Wednesday, December 5 - Unit Test; Topic #4.
    • Thursday, December 6 - The Middle East to 1956 (base notes). Video clip from the 20th Century History series - if available. Watch the BBC documentary The Birth of IsraelFor those really interested in the Middle East - try The 50 Years War; Israel and the Arabs (chunked into 29 parts, I just link to the Youtube directory for its parts). There is a nice BBC documentary on the 1956 war - The Other Side Of Suez 1956 (part 1part 2part 3).
    • Friday, November 7 - Complete the Middle East to 1956. If time, begin video Mr. Kennedy & Mr. Khrushchev (sorry, not available online). If time, Begin the Cuban Missile Crisis (base notes). Be sure to watch CNN's Cold War; Episode 10; Cuba 1959-1962. Thirteen Days is a decent Hollywood treatment of the crisis, though it is a little loose in dealing with people and events -- not enough to worry about messing up your knowledge for the final exam though.

    Social Studies 11

Your unit test on the period 1919-1945 -- the interwar years and World War II is on Monday.  The mark breakdown for the unit test is most likely to be as follows: 45 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each) and 3 from a choice of 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 73 marks. 5 bonus marks are available if you submit more than 25 flash cards done as required.

    • Tuesday, December 4 - Test post-mortem.  Take up sidebar questions pp. 140, 141 #1-2, 143 #3, 145 & #1-6, p. 146.  Block 3 - Watch Canada; A People's History; The Shadow of Nuclear War and go over the questions.  Block 4 - Just go over the questions.   PowerPoint Post 1945 Canada. Material from Canada; A Peoples’ History; Comfort & Fear. ("First Tremors" "A Prairie Storm" & "The Fight for Medicare" - questions), Read pp. 146-156. Do sidebars p. 146 ; #1-4, p. 150, #1-3, p. 155 & #1-5, p, p. 156. Watch the stunning British Documentary Nuclear War: A Guide to Armageddon (Part 1Part 2Part 3) to understand the stakes of nuclar confrontation. Another rivetting show on nuclear war is Threads, a BBC production about what would happen to a community if nuclear war occurred.
    • Wednesday, December 5 -  Take up sidebar, #1-3, p. 155, #1-5, p. 156. Material from Canada; A Peoples’ History; Comfort & Fear.
