• Wednesday, September 19 -   Greek Architecture PowerPoint -overhead notes. Be sure to read Greek Architecture: Pursuing Perfection Adapted From: Architecture For Dummies. Work on thepackage.
• Thursday, September 20 -   See episode 6 of The Western Tradition; Greek Thought (Available online). Work on package.
• Friday, September 21 -  Professional Day.  Classes are not in session, so why not work on Civ.!

History 12 

The first History test will be on Monday of this week -- postponed from last week. There will likely be 15 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 10 definitions -- where I give you the definition and you give me the term or name (1 mark each), 5 definitions -- where I give you the term or name and you provide the definition or why the person is important (2 marks each), and one essay (worth 18 marks - with 6 for composition and 2x6 for content). The test will most likely be out of 53 marks.

Make sure that your Topic #1 work is in today or you will face a late deduction on your mark.

Don't forget that Essay #1 is out there and due on September 28.

• Monday, September 17 - Topic #1 Unit Test.    Pick up Topic #2 Plan (Please note that the plan went to print before we postponed the Topic #1 test to today -- it is already a day off) and Topic #2 Questions.
• Tuesday, September 18 - Complete any unfinished material from last Friday --  Begin Imperialism & Social Darwinism PowerPoint (base notes).  Begin  Europe Before World War I - the Alliance system. Begin looking at the nations of Europe before the War. Base notes. Work on Topic #2 Questions.
• Wednesday, September 19 -  Continue with the nations of Europe before the war - finish Russia/France/Britain - base notes -- then continue with the Ottoman Empire/Germany & Italy - base notes.
• Thursday, September 20 -   Finish the countries of Europe before the war - concluding Ottoman Empire/Germany & Italy -base notes. If time, look at causes of the war and reasons for peace in 1914 - base notes.
• Friday, September 21 - Professional Day - No Classes - What a great opportunity to work on the Topic #2 questions or to work on your research essay.

Social Studies 11 

Expect your first unit test on Ideologies/Parties/Elections to, most likely,be on Monday, September 24 -- or thereabout.  We will start the next unit before then, but this will give you the weekend to study.  The mark breakdown is most likely to be as follows: 30 multiple choice question (1 mark each); 4 items to label on a diagram (1 mark each); 5 definitions - you write a sentence or two about each term or name (2 marks each); 2 long answer questions from a choice of 4 options (6 marks each). The test should, therefore, be out of about 66 marks.

• Monday, September 17 - Take up I Can Vote and #1-3 & 5, p. 115. Elections handout. Elections in Canada – The first-by-the-post system. (If time; proportional representation too). Read Government pp. 88-97. Do #4, p. 97. Research Canadian federal political parties. Which party would you support in the next federal election? Why? About a half page or so of writing is needed to adequately answer this question. Value: 10 marks, due Tuesday (next class). Find political party information at Elections Canada's registered political parties page.  Watch this video account of the problems with first past the post elections.
• Tuesday, September 18 - Take up #1-3, p. 257 & #4, p. 97. Elections lesson – day 2. Various voting systems. BCSTVanimation. Assignment: What electoral system do you feel is best? Why? (due Monday. About 1 page).
• Wednesday, September 19 -  Note: We are beginning the next unit today and this material will not be on Monday's's test. We are doing so to test on the day indicated in earlier blog-posts. I will explain my flash card bonus mark policy today. Begin Legislative Branch - focus on the House of Commons. Be sure to look at the Parliament of Canada website. Download, read and study from the Guide to the House of Commons. Read pp. 231-233 sidebar. Do #1-3 in the sidebar on p. 233. Study for the test Monday.
• Thursday, September 20 - Originally this was to be test day, but we've postponed until Monday. 
  • Take up #1-3 in the sidebar on p. 233. Reminder of the physical layout of Parliament. Video - Government in Canada; Citizenship in Action; Our National Parliament; the Inside Story and questions. Discuss the job of a Member of Parliament - within and outside the House of Commons. Go online to read On the Job With a Member of Parliament). Read 226-231. Do #1-3, p. 231.
• Friday, September 21 - Professional day, so classes are not in session. Use this time to catch up on any missed assignments.

Laurie Bridge recommended John Green's Crash Course videos on Civilizations.  Give him a try for quirky, high interest treatments of ancient cultures -- like Egyptian Civilization.  His video clips are short and appear well researched.  If you are interested in cultures that we won't look at in class, these are great quick overviews.

• Monday, September 10 - Introduction to Architecture. Ancient Egyptian Architecture PowerPoint and Handout. Work on package. Two interesting videos to look at if you have time include:Engineering an Empire; Egypt, and Engineering Marvels; Egypt.Pyramid enthusiasts are encouraged to watch the BBC documentaryBuilding the Great Pyramid (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6).
• Tuesday, September 11 - Egyptian Sculpture Powerpoint presentation. Work on package. There are many interesting online videos dealing with Egyptian sculpture. I particularly like the work of Lucas Livingston in his Ancient Art Podcast series. Try the following: Statue of Osiris, part a and part b, Ra-Horakhty, and The Mummy Case of Paankhenamun, part a and part b. 
• Wednesday, September 12 -  Egyptian painting and low relief sculpture PowerPoint. Work on package.
• Thursday, September 13 -  Change of Plan.  The Egypt package was to be due today.  You may hand it in of Friday if you wish. Video – Art of the Western World; The Classical Ideal – part 1. Work on either package. Egypt due in class Friday. Note: Video is available from CPB/Annenberg http://www.learner.org/ go to Video on Demand/Programs. Search for Art of the Western World; The Classical Ideal. Work on Greek Package.
• Friday, September 14 -  Hand in your Egypt package by 4:30 today -- if you did not hand it in on Thursday.  I have misplaced the computer discs with the material I planned to use today.  Instead I have a treat for you, but it will involve losing work time.  We will watch a BBC Documentary called How Art Made the World; More Human Than Human. Work on the package.

History 12

You must be sure to visit The History Guide for excellent background material supporting this course.

All Topic #1 work is due by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the test. Essay #1 is due a couple of weeks later.

OK -- As you are probably noticing.  We are  more than a little behind the plan on Thursday.  I am therefore putting off test day  until Monday of next week  - however, your package of work is still due Friday.  Be sure to keep a copy of your questions to study from over the weekend.  If your work is only handwritten, scan it, photocopy it, or get me to photocopy it..  Those of you also taking my Comparative Civilization course will  face two collection days at once, so you can put off handing in one of the packages of work until Monday.  The other will come in Friday, by 4:30 p.m.

• Monday, September 10 -  Writing History essays & MLA style . Work on Topic 1 questions.
• Tuesday, September 11 -  Begin Themes and Topics in History 12.  We still did not finish the writing history and MLA PowerPoints.  We will start them next class. Work on Topic 1 questions.
• Wednesday, September 12 -  First, complete MLA style.  Themes and Topics in History 12. Work onTopic 1 questions.
• Thursday, September 13 -  If need be we will complete the PowerPoint Themes and Topics before moving on to   Begin Imperialism & Social Darwinism PowerPoint (base notes). 
• Friday, September 14 -  Once again, we didn't finish Thursday's work, so we will complete Themes and Topics today and probably Begin Imperialism and Social Darwinism.  Pick up Topic #2 Plan and Topic #2 Questions. Work on topic 2 questions. See what Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe has to say about Imperialism in Africa in this YouTube video.

• Monday, September 10 - Origins of the Political Spectrum - including summary handout sheet.  PowerPoint –“Ideologies”.Ideology identification practice. ) The following reading is completely optional: For an interesting American article on the difference between Lefties and Righties, see Patricia Cohen's New York Times Article: "Across the Great Divide; Investigating Links Between Personality and Politics."
• Tuesday, September 11 -  Ideologies Identification homework. PowerPoint –“Ideologies” Video clip on ideologies - sorry, not available online. Other ways to show political spectrum. More practice with ideologies.
• Wednesday, September 12 - Sign out Counterpoints text.  Take up homework.  Lecture/discussion - from ideologies to political parties - national parties in Canada.  Read Counterpoints pp. 255-258.  Do #3 & 4, p. 258.  For homwork you earlier did an online quiz to determine your ideology.  Which political party comes closest to your views? You might try some more tests -- mostly American - to see where you stand.
• Thursday, September 13 - Take up homework.  Placing parties on the political spectrun.  PowerPoint.  BC & Canadian political parties.  Read Counterpoints  pp. 249-258.  Do #1-5, p. 253 and sidebar #1-3, p. 257.
• Friday, September 14 - Take up #1-5, p. 253, #4, p. 258 & sidebar, #1-3, p. 257.  Review of party positions on the political spectrum, what parties currently stand for, and names of party leaders.  Introduction to political party organizations.  As part of your homework, you must go to Elections Canada's pages entitled I Can Vote,  with information for young voters.  Answer these questions.  Read pp. 109-115 in the Red Government text and answer questions 1-3 &; 5, p. 115.  Optional:  Click here to get a list of all of the political parties, with links to their web-pages.

• Wednesday, September 5 - Introduction. Expectations. Handouts: Course Outline, Why Study Art. Principles of Design. Terms. Intro to Civilization. If you get the chance, watch the 51 minute video by Michael Wood - Legacy; Origins of Civilization on Iraq, to get a wider perspective on the earliest civilizations.
• Thursday, September 6 - Art Analysis format and example. Egypt Package Assigned. Video – Legacy; Egypt; The Habit of Civilization. Work on package. Another interesting video overview is Civilisations; Egypt (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6) - note this is a French documentary and though the narration has been given in English, some of the interviewees, though not all, speak French and no sub-titles are given.
• Friday, September 7 - Episode 2 – The Western Tradition (register with PBS - free -- to access this and many other videos.)Introduction to Ancient Egypt handout. Work on package. Work on theEgypt package. Consider looking at the following if you have time on your hands: Ancient Art podcast; Walk Like an Egyptian part 9a andpart 9b - these deal with the Egyptian concept of Maat - cosmic order and justice. Also interesting are three episodes in the Egypt’s Golden Empire series: Pharaohs of the Sun, The Warrior Pharaohs, and The Last Great Pharaoh.

History 12

Our first unit is an introduction to History and the Writing of History.

Be aware, this is a lecture course. Because almost all students who sign up for this course are university or college bound, I have structured the course in this way to help you make the transition to post-secondary studies easier. Class work will be done entirely outside of class time. I will give you a plan at the start of each unit, which sets out a suggestion about when you should complete what. You may handle this differently if your personal timetable requires that you rearrange the work. However, the due dates are clearly set down. If they present problems for you, I need to know ahead of time and will likely arrange an extension, if the circumstances warrant doing so.

• Thursday, September 6 - Historiography and Historical Interpretation PowerPoint. Go to The History Guide and look at their page entitled "A Student's Guide to the Study of History" for useful tips on how to approach this and other history courses. These are university level tips, but good advice for History 12 too.
• Friday, September 7 - Theories of History PowerPoint.

We will begin with the Government unit and start with the old red text to deal with ideologies. You will get the Counterpoints text, which we will use for most of the semester, once we get past ideologies -- which Counterpoints does not deal with well.

• Thursday, September 6 - Hand out textbooks. Complete anything missed from yesterday's introduction. Discuss whether or not government is necessary. Introduction to the three branches of government. Read pp. 2-6 in redGovernment text. Do #1-4, p. 6.

• Friday, September 7 - Take up homework. Introduction to ideologies. Origins of the Political Spectrum. Read pp. 7-15 in Government text. Do #1-5, p. 11 and #1-6, pp. 15-16. To identify your own ideology, take the onlinePolitical Compass Quiz.

Final Exam times and locations are now posted around the school.  Students with IEPs have been told of alternate locations where they will write their exams and have special accommodations.  Be sure to arrive early to ensure that you allow for unexpected delays or problems.

Most students will write in the posted locations:

SS8   Exam time is Monday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Block 2 will write in room D202; Block 4 will write in room D203. 

SS11 Exam time is Thursday, June 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the small Gym

Social Studies 8

A bonus assignment is now available to help you boost your mark before the final exam. Look at it and follow the instructions.   I have caught up with my marking and will accept bonus material until the final exam on Monday, June 18.  

Be sure to return your texts before the exam or I will have to present you with a bill as you write the test.
