The due date for this work is not until right after the Christmas holidays, to allow plenty of time for research and discussion with family members.

We are several weeks away from our next unit test. The Renaissance units are a couple of weeks in length each. The Man the Measure of All Things package is due this Friday - a day later than advertised last week.

• Wednesday, December 3 - Grunewald & Bosch. I highly recommend seeing Carol Gerten's pages on Grunewald, and Bosch - read the biographies and look at the images. Work on the package.

• Friday, December 5 – Hero as Artist Package assigned. Filmstrip or video (if available). Work on the new package. Hand in the Man the Measure of All Things package by 4:30 p.m. today.

History 12

Topics 5 & 6 are run together as a single unit: the Cold War. There will not be a unit test on this material - but it will be covered extensively on the final examination - whether you choose to write the in-class or provincial exam.

The first term ended on Friday of last week. Mid semester marks are now being finalized. I will take in late assignments and conduct make up testes until Wednesday, November 12. I cannot guarantee being able to mark, record and get onto this report any work that comes in after this time. I will be entering report marks on Thursday and submitting them Friday morning.

There is a major research assignment currently underway, the Family History - Immigration Assignment (With additional options for International and First Nations students.) The due date for this work is not until right after the Christmas holidays, to allow plenty of time for research and discussion with family members.)

The next unit test is a bit over a week away and will include all of the material on Canada between the world wars and World War II. The minimum number of flash cards for 5 bonus marks is 30. Start making and using your flash cards now! Expect roughly the following breakdown for marks on the unit test: 45 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each), 3 from a selection of 5 long answer questions (5 marks each). The total value of the test is, therefore, about 71 marks -- subject to last minute changes.

• Tuesday, November 11 - Remembrance Day. Be sure to attend a community ceremony. North Vancouver's largest is at the cenotaph, Victoria Park -- at Lonsdale and Keith Road.


• Wednesday, November 12 - Take up #1, 2 & 4, p. 122. View some of the Omaha Beach segment from Saving Private Ryan - You are not obligated to see this as it is extremely graphic and has been described as the closest approximation yet made on film of actual combat. Complete Episode 2; Canada Remembers; The Liberators - D-Day to the Rhine and questions. Begin Episode 3; Canada Remembers; Endings & Beginnings and questions. Read pp. 122-125. Do #1-3, p. 125.


• Thursday, November 13 - Take up #1-3, p. 125. Complete Episode 3; Canada Remembers; Endings & Beginnings and questions. If there is time, we will begin watching The Valour and the Horror; Savage Christmas. While watching it, do the questions and prepare for the assignment given at the end of the question sheet. Read pp. 125-128. Do sidebar question p. 128 & 1-4, p. 128.


• Friday, November 14 - Take up sidebar question p. 128 & 1-4, p. 128. Continue (& probably finish The Valour & the Horror; Savage Christmas, the questions, and begin work on the assignment at the end of the questions. Complete the assignment for Monday - unless we do not finish the film in class today. Read the sidebar on pp. 126-127 & handouts. Do #1-2, p. 127.

Comparative Civilizations 12

The next unit test will be on Monday, November 17; we will test Islamic Civilization and the Western Middle Ages together. The mark breakdown on the test is as follows: 10 slide identification items (2 marks each), requiring you to name the work and say what city it can be found in - give the country for 1/2 a mark; Church Floorplan and nave elevation parts identification (1 mark each), 40 multiple choice questions (1 mark each); 2 from a choice of 3 illustration interpretation questions (6 marks each) and one essay question from a selection of 7 questions (18 marks - 1 x 6 for composition and 2 x 6 for content). The total value of the test is, therefore, 100 marks.

• Monday, November 10 - Gothic Painting PowerPoint. Sister Wendy video segment (**Note: We barely started this, so it will roll over to Wednesday's class). Work on Romance & Reality package. If you have the time and inclination, do watch Bill Moyer's interview of Sister Wendy -a humble genius of art analysis.


• Tuesday, November 11 - Remembrance Day. Visit the cenotaph for the ceremony if you can manage it.

• Friday, November 14 - Video: The Western Tradition; The Late Middle Ages Romance & Reality package due Monday – along with Exam. Work on package.

History 12

Essay #2 is underway and is due any time this week. Your next unit test is still about a week off. Expect roughly the following material on the Topic #4 Test: 70 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 map items (1 mark each), and 2 from 4 Long Answer questions (12 marks each - based on 2 x 6). The total value will therefore be around 99 marks.

Be sure that you have the plan for Topic #4 and Topic #4 Questions. Do not procrastinate and leave the work until the end. This is a big unit and it needs to be tackled a little bit at a time.

These are fabulous, though admittely, UK-centric sources of fascinating material. Look at the World War II animated maps and flash movies that relate to the war.

I will post test information as we get closer to the exam and we will set the minimum number of flash cards for full bonus marks at that time. However, start making and using your flash cards now!

While this is really about the US, it is not possible to understand the Canadian situation without referring to what happened in our neighbour to the South.

If you are interested and have the time, watch this British anti-war advertisement from the 1930s to understand the roots of appeasement. In contrast, listen to this warning from Winston Churchill at the same time. Watch the 20 minute 30's documentary: The European Arms Race 1935 - 1939 part 1 and part 2. To see Nazi Germany, watch this largely unnarrated documentary, Nazi Germany Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8 & Part 9. How Were Decisions Made in Nazi Germany. Look at Hitler's art: Part 1, Part 2.

• Thursday, November 6 - Video - Faith in Numbers (Available in parts on Youtube: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5). This is a quirky but fascinating film that covers far more than what we are looking at in this unit -- but, like all of the other films in James Burke's Connections series some of the best documentary viewing around. Burke sees History as moving forward because of strange and quirky connections being made between ideas, generating revolutionary changes. New Package, Romance & Reality assigned. Great Thaw package, is to be handed in by 4:30 p.m.
• Friday, November 7 - Romance & Reality filmstrip. Work on Package.

The next unit test will be on Tuesday and will include the introduction to History, and Canada from 1900 to 1919. The mark breakdown is roughly as follows (subject to last-minute changes): 38 multiple choice questions (1 mark each); 5 definition questions (2 marks each); 4 from a selection of 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total value of the test is, therefore, around 72 marks. 5 Bonus marks are available for completing a minimum of 30 good flash cards (terms & names only on one side; definitions or why the person is important on the other).

• Monday, October 27 - Hand in the Literature of War assignment. Take up the two board questions from Thursday: 1) Do you think that the the peace arrangement arrived at in 1919 was workable? Why or why not? 2) How serious was the flu epidemic of 1918-1920? (If available) Video Clip from Canada; A Peoples' History; Ordeal by Fire on the great influenza pandemic. Note pandemics are an ongoing concern and that they have had a huge influence on history. Discuss historical examples. Lecture: The End of World War I & the Paris Peace Conference. Video Make Germany Pay (sorry - not available online) and board questions: 1) Who were the main participants in the Conference and what did they want? 2) What important powers were not invited to attend? 3) What were the key outcomes of the Conference? Read pp. 42-46. Do #1 sidebar, p. 44, 1. Explain how Canada’s role in the world was different in 1919 to 1914. 2. What limited the effectiveness of the League of Nations from its very start? 3. What great epidemic swept the world from 1918-1920? What was its effect in Canada? Unit Test on Unit 1 next class.

Be sure to include a note on the front page of your assignment reminding Mr. Benoy of the specifics of your extension arrangement. The Great Thaw package will be due Thursday, next week.

There is a major research assignment currently underway, the Family History - Immigration Assignment (With additional options for International and First Nations students.) The due date for this work is not until right after the Christmas holidays, to allow plenty of time for research and discussion with family members.)

The next unit test will be Tuesday of next week and will include the introduction to History, and Canada from 1900 to 1919. The mark breakdown is roughly as follows (subject to last-minute changes): 38 multiple choice questions (1 mark each); 5 definition questions (2 marks each); 4 from a selection of 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total value of the test is, therefore, around 72 marks. 5 Bonus marks are available for completing a minimum of 30 good flash cards (terms & names only on one side; definitions or why the person is important on the other).

• Wednesday, October 22 - Take up homework - discuss the social changes brought by World War I. PowerPoint The Conscription Crisis segment from Canada and World War I. (If Available) Video segment from Canada; A Peoples' History; Ordeal By Fire; Turmoil on the Homefront and handout. While watching the episode answer the following board questions: 1) Why was opposition to the war strongest in Quebec? 2) What did people do to express their disapproval? Read pp. 38- 41 and do #1, 4 & 5 on p. 41. Also answer the question in figure 2-21 on p. 42.
• Thursday, October 23 - Take up homework. Literature of War Assignment. Using computers (if available) or handouts and library resources. 10 marks, due Monday. Read pp. 42-46. 1) Do you think that the the peace arrangement arrived at in 1919 was workable? Why or why not? 2) How serious was the flu epidemic of 1918-1920?
• Friday, October 24 - Provincial Professional Day - While I am off in Coquitlam meeting with Social Studies teachers from across the province, take the time to catch up and prepare for the test on the material we have covered in history so far -- essentially chapters 1 & 2 in the textbook. You might consider looking at other World War I videos - see my online video directory for World War I. Pick something that looks interesting to you.

Ensure that you have both the Topic #3 outline and the Topic #3 questions. The test for this unit is a week off at this point - likely Monday, October 27ish. We are running a bit behind schedule at the moment. • Thursday, October 23 - We will finish anything not completed on unit 3, and begin the first lecture material on unit 4 (I am running the Europe and the coming of the Great Depression material into the next unit instead of this one in order to recover some lost time.) Video: The Road to War; Japan or The Road to War; the Soviet Union (provided I can get this video series to track on the new vcr -- or can patch in via an older device with a tracking control. Otherwise, it is likely to be another video on the period.

The test on Provincial and Municipal Government will be a take-home test, assigned on Monday, October 7. This is to be handed in the following day. Students who have work or other commitments on Tuesday night must see Mr. Benoy to arrange to write an alternate test earlier or later in the week.
