December 18-22







Enjoy the Christmas festivities, but don't forget -- there are only three weeks left after we return, so be sure to do some ho ho homework. Grade 12's be sure to catch up. Grade 11's make sure that you look at the provincial exam (Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/search/ and look at the Socials 11 sample and key. Be sure to write it before coming back after the break.

If you have the time and inclination, the Ministry of Education is asking for feedback on the current Social Studies curriculum from teachers, students and parents. If you are interested in getting your two bits in, go to the following website and type away: http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/drafts

History 12

Keep working as per the assigned package. Remember, Essay #3 is due during the last week of December, questions #1-42 are also due on Thursday, Dec. 21 (20 marks), questions 43-89 ar due on Monday, January 22 (20 marks) and an in-class essay will be written on a topic prepared in advance on Tuesday, January 23.

  • Monday, December 18 - Finish Gwynne Dyer's War; Notes on Nuclear War. Begin the lecture on Decolonization - the British and French experiences.
  • Tuesday, December 19 - Complete Decolonization, Begin Indochina & the Vietnam Wars.
  • Wednesday, December 20 - Indochina & the Vietnam Wars.
  • Thursday, December 21 - Vietnam War - AV from the series The 10,000 Day War.
  • Friday, December 22 - Vietnam War - further AV from the series The 10,000 Day War.

Comparative Civilizations 12

The Hero as Artist will not be due until shortly after returning from the Christmas holidays (Wednesday). This is another very large package. We will begin a very short Mannerism Package at the end of the week. It too will come in soon after the Christmas break -- at the same time as another very short package that will be assigned in the first week back, The Reformation. These two short packages will both be handed in on the second Monday after we return from the break; together, they are much shorter than the current package.

  • Monday, December 18 - Da Vinci. Work on the package.
  • Tuesday, December 19 - Raphael & Bramante. Work on the package.
  • Wednesday, December 20 - Titian & Giorgione. Work on the package.
  • Thursday, December 21 - Mannerism package assigned. Parmigianino & Bronzino. Work on the packages.
  • Friday, December 22 - Bologna & Celinin. Sister Wendy video selections on the late Renaissance and Mannerist painters.

Social Studies 11

Note: The Geography textbook - The 21st Century World is available on the school server and is also accessible on the Internet at http://www.design4effect.com/soc11/ -- be aware, the text is now several years old and hyperlinks do not always work. I am preparing to revise and update the work, but have not had time to do so yet. PowerPoint material supporting the Geography unit is also available on the school server, but not yet on the Internet.

Chapter 1 will be quizzed on Tuesday. Chapter 2 2ill be tested after Christmas.

Be sure to get caught up after Christmas and you must begin preparation for the Provincial final exam.

  • Monday, December 18 - Take up #1-2, p. 17 & #1-4, p. 21. Finish PowerPoint in block 4. Both blocks – continue with Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth – viewing guide questions. Read the conclusion on p. 22 and do #1-2, p. 22. Read pp. 29-31. Do #1-3 & #1-3, p. 31.
  • Tuesday, December 19 - Take up homework. Begin Population PowerPoint. Ch. 1 quiz. Read pp. 31-35.Do #1-2, p. 33 (but note correction in text On question 1 the years should say 1980 & 1990) Do #1-2, p. 37 (But use 2006 data at http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/demo10a.htm). Do #1-2, p. 37. Use 2001 data.
  • Wednesday, December 20 - Take up homework. PowerPoint – Theories of Population and the Demographic Transition Model. Read pp. 37-42. Do #1-6, p. 39 & 1-6, pp. 41-42).
  • Thursday, December 21 - Video – Population Transition in Italy and question (or alternative, if unavailable). Read pp. 42-45. Do #1-5, p. 45.
  • Friday, December 22 -
    Take up homework. Video –
    Escaping from History. Gwynn Dyer on Mexico. Questions. Over Christmas, go to http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/search/ and put in the appropriate information. Download the exam and key. Write this for practice.
