Social Studies 8


We are currently working on an overview unit of Indian, Chinese and Japanese History. The unit test will be on all three parts and will likely be given on Thursday of next week. The mark breakdown is as follows: 25 multiple choice (1 mark each), 2 x 5 matching (1 mark each) and 2 of 3 long answer questions (6 marks each), for a grand total of 47 marks. At least 30 flash cards are needed to earn a 5 mark bonus on the test.

• Monday, May 21 - No classes - Victoria Day Holiday. (Finish up with the heaps of work assigned Friday.)
• Tuesday, May 22 - Hand in map assignment. Take up #1-7, p. 125. and questions from Marco Polo handout. Introduction to Japan. Cultural comparison of Japan & the West. Personal slides (Note: Change of plan. I could not get a projector that showed the slides adequately, so we changed to a travel video on Japan as an introduction). Read pp. 126-130. Do #1-6, p. 130.
• Wednesday, May 23 - Take up homework. Introductory video – Samurai Warriors. Video & questions: Secrets of the Samurai (Available at United Streaming). Assignment: 10 marks, due Friday. class. Compare the Samurai with Medieval European Knights. How were they similar and how were they different. Unit Test on India/China/Japan next class.
• Thursday, May 24 - Unit Test – India/China/Japan. Sign out new texts. Begin Atlas worksheet - Do #1-8.
• Friday, May 25 - Introduction to Geography. Warm-up game. Read Geographical Essentials pp. 1-7. Complete the Atlas worksheet for Monday.

We are currently completing a unit on Post-World War II Canada. A large test will be given on Friday. The breakdown of marks is as follows: 42 multiple choice items (1 mark each), 4 definitions/names (2 marks each) and 2 from 4 long answer questions (6 marks each) for a total of 62 marks. 25 flash cards are the minimum needed to earn 5 bonus marks on the exam.

The final section of the course will follow - current world issues in human geography. Units will include: Global problems, Population & Urbanization, Standards of Living, Resources, and Global Solutions/Foreign Aid.

Friday, May 25 - Unit Test on Post-War Canada. Hand in History text and sign out Geography text. Read pp. 5-11. Do #1-5, p. 11.

Social Studies 11 (Honours)

Post War Canada will be tested Tuesday. The breakdown of marks is as follows: 42 multiple choice items (1 mark each), 4 definitions/names (2 marks each) and 2 from 4 long answer questions (6 marks each) for a total of 62 marks. 25 flash cards are the minimum needed to earn 5 bonus marks on the exam.

We may attend a speaker on Climate Change on Friday. This is being arranged by another class. While I am reluctant to give up a class, this topic is a hot one on the provincial exam, so if the presentation goes ahead, I think it worthwhile for exam review purposes. This presentation is awaiting final approval from administration.

The final section of the course is political science -- a study of Canada's political system. Units will include Ideologies, Political Parties and Elections, the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches of government, the Constitution, and Procincial & Municipal Government. With limited time to go, I will roll most material into one unit test - covering Ideologies, Parties, elections and the Legislative/Executive/Judicial branches of government. We will not give a unit test for the remainder of the material -- but it is material that might find its way onto the Provincial final exam. I really do not want to waste instructional time testing at this point.

Social Studies 8

The big Middle Ages assignment was due at the start of last week. It is still possible to earn marks to a 50% credit if overdue work is handed in. This also goes for parts of the assignment that were not submitted. Be sure to look at your mark sheet and get any missed material to Mr. Benoy as quickly as possible.

This video is no longer playable. Instead, we saw a video from the same series on Kublai Khan's grandfather, the founder of the Mongol Empire -- Ghengis Khan. Students were asked to 1) Explain why the Mongols were so feared at the time of Genghis Khan. and 2) Describe Genghis Khan himself. Out of this students were given the assignment of writing a paragraph to a page describing Genghis Khan. This is due next class and worth 10 marks. The map assignment originally scheduled for today is postponed.

The Major assignment on the Middle ages is due on Monday. Miss Hartigan will be marking this one. There will also be a test on the Renaissance and Reformation on Tuesday. The mark breakdown for this test is as follows: 5 image identification of Renaissance paintings or sculptures -- names of the creator or names of the work (1 mark each); 30 multiple choice questions (1 mark each); 10 matching questions (1 mark each); 5 definitions (2 marks each); 2 from 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total value of the test is, therefore, 67 marks. It is possible to earn up to 5 bonus marks by handing in at least 30 flash cards.

Note: We did not get as far as expected this week, so changes have been made to Thursday and Friday's class since I first posted this on Saturday. There will be a unit test on Tuesday, covering everything from the introductory section on History to the end of Chapter 2 (The First World War). Expect the test to have roughly the following breakdown (within a few marks in each section): 40 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 Definitions (2 marks each) and 3 from a choice of 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). Social Studies 11 Honours

The chapter 4 & 5 unit will be completed on Monday, but we decided in class to leave the test until Thursday, to avoid clashes with other course tests. The History unit will, therefore, commence on Tuesday. The unit test will probably involve: 40 multiple choice questions (1 mark each) and 3 of 8 long answer questions (6 marks each) -- for a total of 58 marks. Flash cards are therefore valued at 5 marks and a minimum of 20 cards are required for the maximum bonus.

We will also begin the Family History/Immigration Assignment. Ordinarilly I would not assign a second major assignment concurrently with another (note the research essay is due a week after we return from Spring Break), however, many students will visit family during Spring Break, so it makes sense to give the assignment now to allow family conversations to take place. This assignment is not due until the end of May.

Social Studies 11 Honours

The next test will be a large unit test, this Wednesday, on both chapter 2 and chapter 3 material. Expect the following breakdown for marks: 65 multiple choice items (1 mark each) and a choice of 3 from 10 long answer questions(6 marks each). Bonus marks for flash cards (term or name on one side; definition or why the person is important on the other) will be valued at 5 marks. It is therefore possible to score up to 88/83 on the test.

The essay coming out of the Essay Writing Workshop material is formally assigned. This will be due in about a month (the exact date will be set with two weeks to go -- hopefully we can avoid tests and other big due dates in other classes).

• Monday, February 26 - Take up #1-5, p. 64 & #1-3, p. 70. Video: Bomb Under the World & questions. Read pp. 70-73. Do #1-8, p. 73.
• Tuesday, February 27 - We had to move to Plan B for today's class. Computers were unavailable in this block, so the Child Labour Computer Lab class is cancelled. We will begin chapter 4 PowerPoint instead. Sorry folks! No homework is assigned. Prepare for the chapters 2 & 3 unit test next class.
• Wednesday, February 28 - Unit Test on chapters 2 & 3. Read pp. 83-86. Do #1-3, p. 84 , #1-4, p. 85 & #1-2, p. 86.
• Thursday, March 1 - Take up homework. Begin chapter 4 PowerPoint. Read pp. 86-91. Do #1-3, p. 87, #1-4, p. 89 & #1-5, p. 91.
• Friday, March 2 - Take up homework. Video: History’s Harvest (Go to www.unitedstreaming.com for this) and questions. Read pp. 91-97. Do #1-5, p. 93 & #1-6, p. 97 - note #3 should say 1973, not 1997.

Social Studies 11 - Regular

The next test will be next week and will be a long one -- testing the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches -- I expect it will be on Wednesday, March 7, but this may change. The text breakdown will probably be 35 multiple choice (1 each), 5 definitions (2 each) and four from five long answer questions (6 each). The total is therefore likely to be out of 69 marks. At least 25 flash cards are needed to generate 5 bonus marks.

• Monday, February 26 - Take up #homework Filmstrip & note-taking or video & questions on Parliament. Review Senate pros & cons. Writing essays. Prepare to write an in-class essay on what should be done with the Senate next class. Handout: How a bill becomes a law. See handouts & web links.
• Tuesday, February 27 - In class essay – What should be done with the Senate? Maintain it as is, reform it, or abolish it? Read pp. 46-54. Do #1-5, p. 48 & #1-7, p. 54.
• Wednesday, February 28 - T/u homework. Introduction to the executive branch. Role of the Queen, Governor General and Prime Minister. Read pp. 55-62. Do #-15, p. 58 & #1-5, p. 62.
• Thursday, March 1 - Take up homework. PowerPoint (In the Government of Canada presentation). Discuss role of cabinet and watch Yes, Minister episode. Read pp. 64-71. Do #1-3, p.p. 67-68 sidebar, #1-4, p. 70 & #2-3, p. 71.
• Friday, March 2 - Take up homework. PowerPoint on the Judiciary(in the Government of Canada presentation). Read pp. 72-75. Do #1-3, p. 75. Read the handout on the courts and do the questions

• Wednesday, February 21 - Take up homework. PowerPoint on ch. 3 (This may take 1-2 minutes to unload). Read pp. 57-61, Do #1-8, p. 61.
• Thursday, February 22 - Take up homework. Continue PowerPoint. Read pp. 61-70. Do #1-5, p. 64 & 1-3, p. 70.
• Friday, February 23 - Professional Day. Take the time to work on your essay.

The mark breakdown is as follows: 15 multiple choice (1 mark each), 4 matching (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each), and one of three long answer questions (6 marks). Bonus marks for flash cards (term or name only on one side; definition or why the person is important on the other) are valued at 3 marks, so the test total is a possible 38/35.

Mia Culpa! I blew it -- Tuesday cannot be test day as we have an assembly for most of the block -- and, of course, Friday is a Professional Day. Blame it on the forgetfulness of old age. Everything will now move forward -- as noted below:

• Wednesday, February 20 - Quiz on Parties & Elections. Handout – “The Work of MPs” Read pp. 35-36. Do #1-4, p. 36.
• Thursday February 21 - Filmstrip or video & questions or note-taking on Parliament. Take up homework. The Senate – Pros and cons of present setup. Read pp. 36-44. Do #1, 3 and #4 in the sidebar on p. 43. Do #1 & 3, p. 44.
