Mr. Nann's test is on Tuesday, April 26. After this time, the class will be with me again.

We are starting a new unit, so our next test is quite a long way off. We will test all of the Middle Ages material together -- so this will involve chapters 3, 4 & 5. I expect it will be about 5 weeks from now -- this is just an estimate.

  • Monday, April 25 - Easter Monday Holiday. No classes.
  • Tuesday, April 26 - Unit Test on Indian and Chinese Civilizations. Look back at pages 14-16, covering the fall of the Roman Empire. Homework: How do you think life changed for people in the Roman Empire once there were no longer Legions to protect people and trade and business broke down in the West? How do you think life might change in our own society if suddenly there was no law and order and our economy completely broke down? Be prepared to discuss this tomorrow. Also, read the handout Einhardt; The Life of Charlemagne and answer the questions on it.
  • Wednesday, April 27 - Take up homework. Watch Video: Europe After the Fall of Rome; 476-1066 AD. Focus Questions: What happened to Britain after the Romans left? How did life change? How did Christian missionaries change the Germans? How was life different than in ancient Roman towns? Read pp. 39-45. Do #1-6, p. 45. When it says "Locate" you must put the location into words. When it says "Identify," be sure to explain what something is or who a person is and why they are important.
  • Thursday, April 28 - Take up the Charlemagne handout from Tuesday. Handout: Charlemagne. Do the questions on the handout for homework. Video: The Dark Ages; Part 8; The Greatest King. What made Charlemagne a great ruler? How did he keep tight control over his subjects? Read pp. 45-48. Do #1-6, p. 48. Interested in the Franks? Watch Barbarians; the Franks. Interested in the Vikings? Why not watch the following: Barbarians; the Vikings.
  • Friday, April 29 - Take up #1-6, p. 48. WatchAncient Warriors: The Vikings, part 1, part 2, part 3(totals just over 20 minutes). Answer the following questions: 1) Why were the Vikings feared by all of Christian Europe? 2) What made the Viking Longship a particularly effective weapon for its time? 3) Where does our knowledge of the Vikings come from? Handout Viking Women. How does this account of Viking life differ from the video? Can you explain the difference?

We did not finish the film last week, so I extended the due date on the Japanese POW assignment to Monday, May 2. This will give you next weekend to study, though we will begin the next unit this week.

Expect the mark breakdown to be as follows: 45 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each) and 3 from a choice of 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 73 marks. 5 bonus marks are available if you submit more than 25 flash cards done as required.

  • Monday, April 25 - Easter Monday Holiday. No Classes.
  • Tuesday, April 26 - Complete watching: The Valour & the Horror; Savage Christmas; Hong Kong 1941 and questions. We will go over any problems with the questions or assignment before moving on. If we have time, I will begin looking at the issue of the Holocaust - see my PowerPoint. Think about the issue of mass murder and come to class prepared to discuss how such an event is possible.
  • Wednesday, April 27 - Discuss explanations for the Holocaust. Complete the PowerPoint, then watch: Video: on the Holocaust (Frontline; Memory of the Camps).
  • Thursday, April 28 - Complete any Holocaust material that we did not finish. Holocaust deniers claim that the Holocaust did not happen or that it is vastly exaggerated. Make a list of evidence proving that the Holocaust did in fact happen -- this will require that you do a little outside research. If time -- Introduction to post-war Canada - PowerPoint: Post 1945 Canada. Read pp. 130-135. Do sidebar questions p. 133 & 134 & #1-4, p. 135.
  • Friday, April 29 - Take up homework. PowerPoint Post 1945 Canada. Material from Canada; A Peoples’ History; Comfort & Fear. (Comfort & Fear, From Sea to Sea and Boom- questions). Read pp. 135-139. Do #1-5, p. 139. Study for unit test on WWII material Monday.

Topic #4 Plan. Topic #4 Questions. Essay #3.

I still expect the unit test to be in the first week of May -- though much depends on our progress this week. Expect the mark breakdown to be approximately as follows: 75 multiple choice (1 mark each), 5 map items (1 mark each), 2 from a choice of 4 long answer questions (10 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 100 marks -- subject, of course, to last minute changes.

  • Monday, April 25 - Easter Monday Holiday. No Classes.
  • Tuesday, April 26 - Complete the World War II chronology PowerPoint (base notes). Hopefully, begin World War II; the British Experience (base notes).
  • Wednesday, April 27 - Complete World War II; the British Experience (base notes). Note: We took more than half of this class to work on grad write-ups, so fell a little behind today.
  • Thursday, April 28 - Complete Total War, the British Experience - then Shoah/the Holocaust PowerPoint (base notes). If you were not in my grade 11 classes last year, or even if you were, it is well-worth watching Frontline's Memories of the Camps video.
  • Friday, April 29 - Complete the lecture from last class: Shoah/the Holocaust PowerPoint (base notes). Watch The World At War; Genocide (part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.)

  • Monday, April 18 - Video: Twentieth Century History: Britain Alone (If available). Continue the World War II chronology PowerPoint (base notes). Interested in the Battle of Britain? Be sure to watch the 1969 movie by the same name. Aircraft used were surviving models from the time - watch the climax scenes here or watch the whole movie ripped to Tudou (CD1 and CD2). The best documentary on the Battle of Britain, in my view, is from the Battlefield series (part 1, part 2). For a Canadian viewpoint on the battle, watch the 20 minute nfb film Churchill's Island. A US wartime perspective can be found at Why We Fight; The Battle of Britain.

  • Tuesday, April 19 - Video: Twentieth Century History; Pearl Harbour to Hiroshima (if available). Continue the World War II chronology PowerPoint (base notes). Don't bother with the movie Pearl Harbour as it is historically poor; do watch Tora! Tora! Tora!

  • Wednesday, April 20 - The Road to Berlin (if available). Continue the World War II chronology PowerPoint (base notes). Use some of your extra time on the weekend to watch some additional videos. Find out more about the Royal Navy in WWII by watching The Royal Navy (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5). Watch World War II in Colour; Nazi Germany Invades Russia, then follow it up with the next installment in the same series: The Soviet Union Strikes Back. If you prefer a movie, rent or download the excellent Enemy at the Gates -- the story of Soviet sniper Valeri Zaitsev. For a German view of the battle, try Stalingrad (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5).

  • Thursday, April 21 - School-Based Professional Day. Teachers go to school and students have some catch-up time.

  • Friday, April 22 - Good Friday Holiday.

We have finished Topic 3 and the test for this unit is this Monday. Questions are due by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 11. Expect the following breakdwon on the test: 50 multiple choice questions, 10 map items (1 mark each), 10 definitions (2 marks each), and 3 from 5 paragraph items (6 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 98 marks.

We are not badly off planned timing and will complete Topic #3 this week. However, it would be foolish to test on the day following the Grad Boat Cruise -- and, I think, not wise to do so on Friday either. I am, therefore, making an executive decision to move the Topic #3 test to next Monday -- April 11 -- (along with the submission of Topic #3 work). This material is coming in a little too late for the report card in any case.

We will start Topic #4 material on Thursday.

Topic #3's Unit Test is not until around Thursday, April 7. I am not exactly sure at this time as we are running a little behind schedule.

  • Monday, March 28 - Introductory video, Berlin in the 1920's. Germany, France & Britain (maybe) in the 1920s (base notes). Interested in the Irish issue? Watch The Anglo Irish War (part 1, part 2, part 3). Be sure to watch this 5 minute video from Irish television on The Irish Civil War; 1922-1923. The best movie about these times is Michael Collins -- worth renting. Learn about Gandhi from the documentary Mahatma Gandhi; Pilgrim of Peace (part 1, part 2, part 3) -- or see the fabulous historical movie: Gandhi.
  • Tuesday, March 29 - Germany & Britain in the 1920s (base notes) - anything not covered Monday. If time, we will continue with the British Empire in the 20's (base notes). We might begin the USA in the 1920s (base notes). Watch Simon Schama's 59 minute documentary on the British Empire, A History of Britain; The Empire of Good Intentions.
  • Wednesday, March 30 - The USA in the 1920s (base notes). Be sure to see the video: The Century; America's Time; Boom and Bust (part 1 - seen at the end of Tuesday's class, part 2, part 3).
  • Thursday, March 31 - Introductory video Fear the Boom and Bust (Pay close attention to this as it deals with the fundamental question of how economies should be run -- looking at the theories of John Maynard Keynes and F.W. Hayek -- in a rap format, oddly enough. To understand the theories expounded in the song, be sure to go to to Econstories.tv to watch the follow-up videos, where experts comment on the ideas of the two greatest economists of the 20th century. The lecture today is the USA in the 1930s (base notes). If available, and if we have time, we will watch the video Roosevelt and the New Deal. Be sure to watch two narrated PowerPoint presentations on Youtube: Melinda Klein's Interwar Years - segment 2 and segment 3 deal with the USA in the 1930s. Also watch either this excellent documentary on the Wall Street Crash of 1929 or this video: 1929; The Great Crash. You might also consider watching Stanford University Professor David Kennedy's discussion: Conversations With History: Lessons from FDR's New Deal.
  • Friday, April 1 - Complete any material from Thursday. Watch The Road to War; USA - ignore the advert that starts it. US Foreign Policy Between the Wars (base notes).

  • Wednesday, March 9 - Mr. Nann took ill today, so I substituted for him. Our lesson was as follows: Hand in the map assignment from last class. Think/Pair/Share exercise on the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire, based on yesterday's film. Video: Terry Jones; Barbarians; The End of the World and questions -- up to #12. We saw only the first half of the film -- dealing with the Huns. Please feel free to watch the rest if you are interested. You have an assignment for tomorrow, worth 10 marks. Imagine that you are a German who joined the Huns. Write a paragraph explaining why you did this.
