Exam Times:

  • Social Studies 8 - Tuesday, June 19, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.
  • Social Studies 11 Provincial Exam - Friday, June 22, from 9:00 am to 12:00 am.

Text books will be collected at the exam location. Be sure to bring them or expect to receive a bill.

I will post Social Studies 8 year end final marks and Social Studies 11 class marks outside my classroom doors by the end of Wednesday, June 20.

June 11-15





This is the last week of classes this year!

Now is the time to begin preparing for the final examination.

1) Be sure all assignments are complete.

2) Start studying for the final.

The lesson plans given below are a guideline only and may be changed during the week. Corrections will be made on this site if this is done.Final exams are looming. All students should be setting aside regular time for review, in addition to ongoing classwork, every day. For study skills tips, refer to my website study skills page.

Social Studies 8

Quizzes may be announced or come as a surprize in the last week. These will generally be 10 marks or less in length. A large Geography unit test will be given on Wednesday. 10 flash cards will earn 3 bonus marks. Expect the test to be out of 75 marks and you will use your atlas to answer the questions.I plan to finish off the year with two days of review, catch up and bonus work.



  • Monday, June 11. Quiz – Latitude, Longitude & Direction. Take up Time Zones #1 worksheet. Go over problems. Time Zones 2.

  • Tuesday, June 12. Take up homework. Mind map. Thematic Maps worksheet. Prepare for Geography test next class.

  • Wednesday, June 13. Geography Unit Test. Pick up Exam preparation material and year end bonus work.

  • Thursday, June 14. What to expect on the final exam. Work on assignment completion and bonus work.

  • Friday, June 15. Assignment completion & bonus work.



Social Studies 11 (Regular)


With so few classes remaining, I will minimize testing. Expect a whopper of a unit test on Tuesday, combining chapters 1-3. I predict about 65 multiple choice questions (1 mark each) and 4 long answer questions, from a selection of around 10 possibilities (6 marks each.). 40 flashcards are expected, to earn 5 bonus marks. Chapters 4 and 5 will not be tested in class, but material will surely show up on the Provincial Final Examination.



  • Monday, June 11. Take up #1-3, p. 84, #1-4, p. 85 & 1-2, p. 86. Complete PowerPoint Ch. 4. Read pp. 86-93. Do #1-4, p. 89, #1-5, p. 91, #1-5, p. 93.

  • Tuesday, June 12. Unit Test – Geography chapters 1-3 inclusive. Read pp. 93-102. Do #1-6, p. 97 (change 1997 to 1973 in question 3), #1-7, p. 102.

  • Wednesday, June 13. Take up homework. Video – History's Harvest - available at United Streaming & questions. Read pp. 103-108. Do #1-6, p. 105 & “Further Thought” #1-4, p. 108.

  • Thursday, June 14. Take up homework. PowerPoint, Chapter 5. Read pp. 116-129. Do #1 & #1-4, p. 118, #1-5, p. 123, & #1-3, p. 129.

  • Friday, June 15. Take up homework. Video – The Fragile Mountains or other development- a. What are the problems identified in the video? b. What solutions are suggested to them? Read pp. 129-132. Do #1-2, p. 131, #1-4, p. 132.



Social Studies 11 (Honours)



With so much to cover and so few classes left, testing is to be kept to a minimum. There will be a large unit test covering ideologies, parties, elections and the Legislative, Executive and Judicial parts of government - probably at the start of the last week of classes. Expect this to comprise the following: 65 choice (1 mark each), 1 political spectrum diagram (4 marks), 10 identifying ideological statements (1 mark each), and 4 long answer questions, from 10 possible options (6 marks each). The test is, therefore, out of 103 marks. 40 flash cards will be needed to earn 5 bonus marks.

Group Work – Identify 3 points in favour of retaining/ reforming/abolishing the Senate Essay: 20 marks. What should be done with the Senate? – Retain it as is? Reform it? Abolish it? Be sure to read material at Maple Leaf Web. Due: Thursday - note, this is an extension from Wednesday -- by popular demand. 5 paragraph minimum. Read p, 43 & handout. Do #1,3& 4 on p. 44.
  • Tuesday, June 5. Introduction to the executive branch. Role of the Queen, Governor General, Cabinet and Prime Minister. Read pp. 46-54. Do #1-5, p. 48 & #1-7, p. 54.
  • Wednesday, June 6. Essay Due. Take up homework. Discuss the role of the PM., Cabinet & the bureaucracy. Watch Yes, Minister episode -- who reallyruns each governmente department? The Cabinet Minister? The Deputy Minister? Read pp. 55-62. Do #1-5, p. 58 & 1-5, p. 62.
