October 1-4

For those of you new to my blogsite, it is intended to work alongside my website at: http://kbenoy.googlepages.com/

e-mail me at http://kbenoy@nvsd44.bc.ca/

Things that are static -- not requiring regular change -- will be posted on the website. This blogsite will have the changing material -- lesson plans and links to particular assignments. I will try to ensure that all assignments are made available on the Internet in this way. If something is underlined on the blog, it means that you can click on it to see a copy of the particular item -- this could be a pdf document, powerpoint, music or a video.

Use this blog to see what is coming up each week. I will usually post it on Saturdays for the following week. If you are away, you can check up on what you are missing. There really is no reason for you not to know what is happening. If you do not have an Internet connection, you certainly know someone who does.

The Ancient World Unit Test will be the day before, on the same day. Expect approximately the following on the unit test: 25 slide identification items (the only closed notes portion of the test) - these have three blanks to fill for each item, though many items only have two possibilities, so the third will be a bonus mark when all three can be identified -- you need to identify the name of the item, the creator, and the historic period the item was created in -- the period options are listed for you to choose from. Don't forget the bonus assignment opportunities for this course (one in the first term and one in the second). Attend a cultural event and explain its cultural significance or create an art analysis for an interesting cultural item. These do not have to be covered within the units we study in the course. They can be of any culture at any time. 10 marks, with the marks assigned to the most recent unit test written.

Note: Monday's class was affected by Internet failure and could not run as planned. The Byzantine Architecture PowerPoint was shown instead of the originally planned video. Original planning has now been pushed one block ahead.

Your Nationalism Essay is due on Tuesday, September 25. It is valued at 20 marks (1 x 5 for conmposition and 3 x 5 for content. This does not follow the usual marking rubric employing 6 marks for each section -- this is deliberate so that the first essay has less weight than later papers, when you will all write more competently.

We are currently a little behind in starting Topic 2 and may have to revise the unit end, depending on our progress in unit work.

Make sure that you have picked up the full plan for Topic 2 and that you have the questions package. Note: This time your responses to the questions will be valued at 30 marks and your map at 10 marks -- for a unit work total of 40.

The test for this unit, which is currently set for Friday, September 28, will have the following mark breakdown (I do reserve the right to vary this a bit, depending on how things go in the unit. Any changes will be noted on the blog.): 60 multiple choice (1 mark each), 10 map items (1 mark each), 5 definitions (I give you the term and you write a definition in a couple of sentences - 2 marks each), and two long answer questions (not essays, but requiring at least one long paragraph each - 10 marks each). The total currently stands at 100 marks. This is a long test, so you must work quickly to finish it in the time provided.

  • Monday, September 17 - Europe Before World War I - part 1. Be sure to write your own notes during the lecture. Afterwards, check them against my base notes. Remember, my notes are always supplemented with impromptu stories and responses to student questions -- so don't just rely on my notes.
  • Tuesday, September 18 - Europe Before World War I - part 2. Base notes.
  • Wednesday, September 19 - (Scheduled as a work block - but I am sure we need this time ) Complete part 2, Causes of War; Reasons for Peace material (base notes).
  • Thursday, September 20 - World War I; 1914-1916ish. (Base notes - section 1 & section 2).
  • Friday, September 21 - World War I; 1916ish to 1917ish) (Base notes - 1916, 1917).
