March 1-5

For those of you new to my blogsite, it is intended to work alongside my website at: http://sites.google.com/site/kbenoy/

Please note: I am too busy to update this site right now and major revisions are needed now that GooglePages has been terminated and my work transferred to GoogleSites, which works differently.

Things that are static -- not requiring regular change -- will be posted on the website. This blogsite will have the changing material -- lesson plans and links to particular assignments. I will try to ensure that all assignments are made available on the Internet in this way. If something is underlined on the blog, it means that you can click on it to see a copy of the particular item -- this could be a pdf document, PowerPoint, music or a video.

Use this blog to see what is coming up each week. I will usually post it on Saturdays for the following week. If you are away, you can check up on what you are missing. There is no reason for you not to know what is happening. If you do not have an Internet connection, you certainly know someone who does. If too ill to work while away, be sure to attach a note from home to any overdue work when you hand it in and I will most likely waive any late deduction.
If you can't read the PowerPoint material on your computer, download PowerPoint Viewer from Microsoft. It is free.
Cool tech tip for Google searches. Did you know that Google allows you to search in a mind-map format -- with the standard search still showing in a sidebar on the right. Here is a quick introduction to Google's "Wonder Wheel" search.

Sutherland has a license to access Discovery Education's United Streaming video collection. Students may download or stream videos from the collection by going to http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm . Use the passcode posted in the classroom. I cannot post this online, but you can confirm the new number by looking at what is posted in the classroom.

Please note: North Vancouver schools have had a hold-back imposed on their supplies budget. As a result, I shall be handing out far fewer paper handouts in class than in the past. Fortunately it is all available here, online. Paper copies will be made available for many items only to those students who specifically request them because they have difficulty accessing online material. Help me save money for the school and also preserve forests by using online material as much as possible.

History 12

Essay #1 is now due on March 1. The essay topic is published at the bottom of the Topic #1 plan. If you wish to submit it earlier, I will be quite happy to receive it. The Topic #2 Plan and Questions are both available. The Topic #3 Plan and Questions are also available.
Essay #2 is now posted.

Your Topic #2 test is on Monday, March 1. Expect the following mark breakdown: 60 multiple choice items (1 mark each), 10 map items (1 mark each), 5 definitiion items (2 marks each) and 2 long answer questions (10 marks each). The total is, therefore, out of 110 marks.

In the future, to save paper, I will only publish copies of these for those who request them. Online copies should suffice for most people.
Comparative Civilizations 12

The Rome Package is due on Monday, March 15 - right after Spring Break. Expect a unit test on the Ancient World at this time.

The mark breakdown for the unit test is as follows: 25 slide identification items, 25 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 10 name the part on a diagram (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each), 1 essay (24 marks - 1 x 6 for composition and 3 x 6 for content). The total is, therefore, out of 94 marks. - there is a bonus possibility on the slide identification portion; there are three components for you to identify -- the creator, the name of the work, and the period that the work was completed in. Since the creator is often unknown in ancient works -- this part will be given as a bonus. Each component is worth 1/2 mark.

Note: We have the pleasure of working with Mr. St. Laurent, a student teacher from UBC, this term. He completed his short first practicum in the Fall and is now with us for his long practicum. If the short practicum is anything to go by, you are in luck having him work with you.

I still have over-all responsibility for the class, but Mr. St. Laurent will do most of the teaching for the next couple of months. There is no shortage of extra help available to you between the two of us!

History 12

We are slightly ahead of schedule with our lectures, so we will have a chance to see additional video material in this unit that is not indicated on the Unit Plan. Sorting out earlier confusion, we have moved the test originally scheduled for this Friday to Monday, March 1. Please note, this will mean that the questions and essay are due on the same day. Be careful in planning how you use your time to ensure all is completed for the due date.

I now have the PowerPoint for World War I available online, click here.

  • Monday, February 22 - This is a Professional Day. Work on your essay and questions.
  • Tuesday, February 23 - Complete the last lesson - Total War; the German Experience - continued (Base notes).
  • Wednesday, February 24 - The Paris Peace Conference PowerPoint. Base lecture notes. If time - AV material - The War to End All Wars - but note, the conference was held in Paris, not Versailles as the film indicates - this film is from a US perspective -- something I do not always present effectively in class (5 minutes), World War One: 1914-1918 Map - a multimedia summary of the war's main events. If you can manage the time, watch Secrets of the Dead; Killer Flu - which deals with the dangers of the flu pandemic that killed up to 30 million people at the end of the First World War.
Thursday, February 25 - The Guns of August. Sorry, this is unavailable on the Internet; at least I have not found it.
  • Friday, February 26 – Complete The Guns of August and do the first lecture from Topic #3 - The League of Nations (base notes). For a good treatment of the League's dealing with a major dispute, see ITV Schools' TV's The League of Nations and the Manchurian Dispute (20 minutes). There is much fascinating material at the League of Nations Homepage. M. Cliffe has a couple of online PowerPoints on the League: The League of Nations and Failures of the League.
  • Monday, March 1 - Hand in Topic #2 questions and Essay #1 today. Unit Test for Topic #2. Pick up Topic #3 questions and plan if you have asked for print copies.

Many students have busy work shedules during the Olympics, so I am allowing an extension on the due date of the essay to Monday, March 1. However, I will be delighted to have submissions before this date. The essay topic is available at the bottom of the Topic #1 plan.

Topic 2 is underway. Make sure that you have the plan and the questions.

If you have time, watch Niall Ferguson's War of the World talk about 20th century history from the Hoover Institute -- a great lecture. Sample from the heaps of online films listed on my Video Clips on World War I file.

The Greece package is underway. Many students have extremely busy work schedules during the Olympic period, so I have agreed to an extension in handing in the Greek package to Tuesday, February 23 -- the day after our Professional Day. If you want to hand in your work before this - on paper or by e-mail submission, I would be delighted to receive it early.

Expect a unit test on the Ancient World when we complete the following package on the Roman and Byzantine world -- probably at the very end of February.

Expect to write your first quiz on Thursday, February 11 Note: this was posted incorrectly last week. We will, however, begin the next unit on Wednesday, the 10th. Writing on the 11th allows anyone to write into the break if they need more time. The test is likely to have 15 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 10 definitions, where I give you the definition and you provide the name or term (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each), and 1 essay (18 marks - 6 for composition and 2 x 6 for content). The total is, therefore 53 marks -- though I reserve the right to adjust the test, based on our progress in the first unit. All topic #1 work is due by 4:30 p.m. on this day.

Essay #1 is a couple of weeks after the first unit ends -- my initial target date is Tuesday, February 23.

Comparative Civilizations 12

Hand in the Egypt package on Wednesday, in class. Click on my Egypt Video Directory to find links to online video resources on this Ancient land. The Greece package follows; be sure to check out some of the video's on my Ancient Greek Video Directory.

Expect a unit test on the Ancient World at the end of February. I will post a breakdown of test marks on this blog as we get closer to test day.
