April 30 - May 4

I would like to thank Miss Christina Hartigan, my student teacher from UBC for all of the hard work she has put in since the start of this semester. She worked with my Social Studies 11 class and, until last Friday, my Social Studies 8 group. We all wish her well as she comletes her practicum and prepares to enter teaching.


Use this blogsite to see what work we will be doing and note homework assignments. I will give advance warning about tests here and inform you of their mark breakdown.

Social Studies 8

There will be a test on the Renaissance and Reformation next Tuesday. The mark breakdown for this test is as follows: 5 image identification of Renaissance paintings or sculptures -- names of the creator or names of the work (1 mark each); 30 multiple choice questions (1 mark each); 10 matching questions (1 mark each); 5 definitions (2 marks each); 2 from 5 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total value of the test is, therefore, 67 marks. It is possible to earn up to 5 bonus marks by handing in at least 30 flash cards.

Note: We did not get as far as expected this week, so changes have been made to Thursday and Friday's class since I first posted this on Saturday. The test scheduled for this Friday is moved to Tuesday. We will begin the next unit on Monday -- the same day as the major Middle Ages Assignment is due.

  • Monday, April 30 - Take up #1-4, p. 147 & Crossword. Filmstrip. Art of the Renaissance. Assignment: Art analysis. Due Wednesday 10 marks.

  • Tuesday, May 1 - Begin watching Romeo & Juliet (Zeffirelli version). Handout sheet to direct note-taking and assignment to complete once the film is finished.
  • Wednesday, May 2 - Hand in Renaissance Art assignment. Continue film. Read pp. 147-150. Do #1-5, p. 150.
  • Thursday, May 3 - Complete any remaining parts of Romeo & Juliet. Take up #1-5, p. 150. Video The Protestant Reformation (Available online from United Streaming) and questions. Read pp. 150-154. Do #1-6, p. 154.
  • Friday, May 4 - Romeo & Juliet Assignment is due. Take up the remainder of p. 150 material. #1-6, p. 154. Video The Protestant Reformation (Available online from United Streaming) and questions. Handout on the Council of Trent.

Social Studies 11 (Regular)

The test on chapters 3 & 4 is approaching soon and will likely be the week after this, on Wednesday or Thursday. Expect a mark breakdown of approximately the following: 45 multiple choice questions (1 mark each), 5 definitions (2 marks each), and 4 of 6 long answer questions (6 marks each). The total is therefore out of about 79 marks. Flash cards may again be submitted for bonus marks and the minimum number to earn the full 5 bonus marks is 30.

The Immigration/Family History Assignment is still ongoing and we will establish a precise due date for it this week or the start of next week at the latest. Expect this date to be on or about Monday, May 14. We will move it slightly if there are major assignments or tests in other academic courses on this date.

  • Monday, April 30 - Hand in Cartoon Analysis assignment. Canada, A People’s History: Hard Times & questions. Read pp. 97-103. Do #1-5, p. 103 & sidebar #1-2, p. 100.
  • Tuesday, May 1 - Take up homework. Complete any remaining parts of Hard Times. Begin King & Country video with questions. Read the chapter summary on p. 104 and do “In Review” questions on p. 104 and “Applying Your Knowledge” on p. 105.
  • Wednesday, May 2 - Take up homework Complete King & Country. Introduction to World War II. Begin video series, starting with Turning the Tide & questions (if time). WWII series. Read pp. 106-111. Do #1-4, p. 112.
  • Thursday, May 3 - Take up #1-4, p. 112. Begin WWII video series. Turning the Tide & questions. Read pp. 112-116. Do #1-5, p. 116.
  • Friday, May 4 - Take up #1-5, p. 116.Continue video series. Begin The Liberators; D-Day to the Rhine and questions. Read pp. 116-121. Do #1-3, p. 121.
